Subject to Rulers

Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men.
Titus 3:1-2

We are coming to the close of Paul’s letter to Titus. So Paul, in conclusion, instructed Titus to remind the people in the churches in Crete to be subject to rulers and authorities and to perform their Christian duties.

Dr. Vernon McGee, who outlined Paul’s letter to Titus, also gave a good reminder of how the church should be operating:

The church must teach sound doctrine, preach the grace of God, and perform good works. The church needs to perform good works. Good works are evident of salvation.

Paul’s reminder to be subject to rulers and authorities helps us to understand that, as Christians, we are not to neglect our civic duties and responsibilities. We are to obey the laws of the land. Christians are to be outstanding citizens, diligent in paying their taxes and obeying any city ordinances.

Even though we are under the rulership of Christ, we are still to be in submission to people holding positions in government and those in places of authority in a country, town or city. As much as possible, believers are to be peaceful in the community, not aggressive, but gentle and humble. They are to show the pattern of good works so that God is glorified. But there are times when they must disobey the authorities. They should never agree to support abortion or gay marriages. When believers are told that they cannot worship or read the Bible, then they are to obey God rather than man (Acts 5:29). They can make a righteous stand.

I thank God for the Holy Spirit because He gives us the wisdom and ability to act righteously. As much as lies within us, God will help us to live a life of obedience, both to God and to man.

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
~Romans 13:1~
