Honorable Behavior in the Workplace
Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.
Titus 2:9-10
Paul addressed the issues of employment. In the era in which he lived, this applied to bondservants and masters. Titus learned from Paul what was ethically right in relation to believers who were bondservants and the way they served their masters. These things he much teach. First, it was an exhortation to be obedient; second, to be well-pleasing; third, was not to answer back; fourth, was not to steal; and fifth, to show fidelity. This would ultimately adorn the doctrine of God.
What Paul told Titus to teach applies to us today as employees in relation to our employers. Are you obedient to your employer in the workplace? Do you have a good work ethic? Do you seek to please the Lord as you work for your employer? Do you accomplish your daily tasks? Are you disrespectful to your employer by answering back? Are you confrontational with your boss?
Are you guilty of stealing from your employer? Do you take home pens, pencils or paper? That is stealing! Another commodity you can steal is time. Are you showing up late for work? Do you leave early? Are you wasting time by taking longer lunch and coffee breaks when you are supposed to be working? Make sure you are on time and, if needed, stay later to make sure your job is completed. Have an honest work ethic.
Show good fidelity. This means you have the kind of character that can be relied upon and trusted. Be an employee who keeps their promises. In this way, you adorn the doctrine of God. What does that mean? The word adorn means “to ornament.” Your life will reflect the beauty of the Lord to your employer and anyone else watching you. Psalm 90:17 tells us: ...let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands for us.... This is how God can use your life to influence people to come to know His Son, Jesus Christ.
God created us for this: to live our lives in a way that makes him look more like the greatness and the beauty and the infinite worth that he really is. This is what it means to be created in the image of God.
