The Love of Money
…those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
1 Timothy 6:9-10
James had sternly warned those desiring to be rich, and so did the Apostle Paul. He also cautioned Christians about the evils of loving money. Rich people tend to have no restraint when it comes to spending their income. They know they can buy whatever they want; they just paying cash for everything. That is why the rich fall into temptation, because their riches can consume them unless they stay close to the heart of God.
Some people believe money is evil. They are mistaken. Money in itself is not evil. It is the desire or love of money that will cause all kinds of evil. Those who are rich are tempted to spend their money in ungodly ways, and they become ensnared. Why covet? Why lust for things? It is the Lord who gives and blesses people, and it is the Lord who takes things away.
I find the rich are restless. They worry about their stocks and all that they own. They become stressed out about their money. Imagine the time and effort spent on the telephone, as they constantly have to check on their finances. They worry about people stealing from them. Perhaps a trusted accountant has swindled them out of thousands of dollars––happens all the time.
Honestly, there has to be a balanced approach to money. I believe this happens when people realize their money has been entrusted to them by God. We are all stewards of what He has given to us––our homes, cars, clothing and shoes. Knowing this will help us take care of these things and spend our money far more wisely. It is very freeing to be where God wants us to be, financially. Be faithful with your finances and be a good steward.
Make money your god, it will plague you like the devil.
