An Admonishment to Younger Women

—that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
Titus 2:4-5

Sadly, we live in times today where older women are not always treated with honor or respect. Some of the younger women in the church are not so eager to learn from them. Even from within their families, their sons and daughters do not regard them in esteem. Sometimes they are mistreated. Elderly mothers are to be loved by their children. As they age, they are to be watched over and cared for.

Titus was instructed to place older women in a position of influence––to teach the younger women in the church. The older women were to encourage the young women to love their husbands and their children. This was their main sphere of influence––to minister to their husbands and children in the home. When younger women are teachable, they will glean from the wisdom and admonitions of older women.

What else were older women to teach the younger women? They were to teach them to be discreet. The word discreet means “of sound mind” or “self- controlled.” The word teach signifies that “they may train.” It expresses that older women must take the younger women under their wing to cultivate their character in such a way as to help them become women who have sound judgment and prudence, who act with wisdom and discretion.

Prudence is lacking among young women today; it needs to be taught. Women who learn to be prudent are able to govern themselves by reason in making wise decisions. They manage their homes well. Most women naturally love to be homemakers. They keep their home in order, leaving no room for idleness.

Young women are taught by the older women to love their husbands and to be submissive to them. They are to love their children and take care of their home. As a wife and mother, if you do these things, you will set a good example, and God’s Word can never be blasphemed.

He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord.
~Proverbs 18:22~
