The Brilliance of God’s Glory
[Jesus] the brightness of His [God the Father] glory and the express image of His person....
Hebrews 1:3
The identity of Jesus is revealed in this one verse. Jesus Christ reflects the brilliance of God's glory because He is God––the express image of His Person. Jesus became incarnate and walked among us. John 1:14 is another verse which perfectly describes how Jesus is the express image of the Father: And the Word [Jesus] became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
The word brightness in Hebrews 1:3 means “the manifestation of God.” It literally denotes “the out shining” or “the imprint.” When a quarter is made, there is an exact likeness of George Washington imprinted on the front of the coin. Jesus is the exact likeness of God––an imprint of His glory is seen in the Person of Christ as He walked among us on earth.
Again, Jesus is the express image of God’s Person. This speaks of His presence among us. When Jesus spoke to His Disciples, He conveyed to them the reality of what Hebrews 1:3 is revealing to us:
“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.” Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me?” (John 14:7-9).
No one can come to the Father unless they come through His Son Jesus who is the brightness of His glory and the express image of His Person. In Psalm 24:8, we are presented with a question: Who is this King of glory? This title of Jesus reveals His divine nature as the One though whom God’s glory is revealed: Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory (Psalm 24:10). Do you know Him personally?
Happy the soul that has been awed by the view of God’s majesty.
