The Godly Characteristics of Older Women
...the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things....
Titus 2:3
Paul instructed Titus on what characteristics were to be exhibited by the older women in the church. Titus was advised by Paul that this was healthy doctrine, and it was to be taught to them. The older women were to be reverent, which means “suited to a sacred character––a life of holiness.” This godly behavior befits their call––a consecrated life.
Therefore, certain behaviors needed to be absent from an aged women’s life. She was not to be a slanderer––a false accuser. Did you know a false accuser describes the personality and work of Satan? She certainly did not want to be like him! Neither was she given to much wine. This woman was to be filled with the Holy Spirit: And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit... (Ephesians 5:18). Titus’ warning to these older women was clear; they were not to live a wasted life. The word dissipation means “an abandoned, dissolute life,” describing a life that has no moral compass.
The older women were to be active in ministry––used by the Lord to be teachers of good things. They were to be valued and honored in the church. Older women have incredible, spiritual wisdom to pass down to the younger women. They become such blessings to their family––to their sons and daughters, and to their grandchildren and great grandchildren.
My wife was an incredible, godly woman. When our grandchildren would come over to our home, they would sit and gather around her while she prayed and read them Bible stories. She played movies that taught them about God. Sharon used every opportunity she had to teach them about the Lord as they played together. She taught them the way of salvation and the grace and mercy of God.
When granted many years of life, growing old in age is natural, but growing old with grace is a choice. Growing older with grace is possible for all who will set their hearts and minds on the Giver of grace, the Lord Jesus Christ.
