The Triune God
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1
Genesis is the book of origins. In verse 1, God created the heavens and the earth. What is so incredible is that when you look at the Hebrew translation, the word used for God is Elohim. This is a reference to the Triunity of God––God is One in three Persons. The word created is the Hebrew word Bara meaning “to create, shape or form.” God did not create the world from existing materials. He created the universe out of nothing. He spoke, and the world came into being.
In John 1:1, we read: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In the Greek language the Word translates to Logos. The Blue Letter Bible explains,
In John’s Gospel, the Word is Jesus Christ, the Person of wisdom and power in union with God, His minister in creation and government of the universe, and the cause of all the world’s life ... which for the procurement of man’s salvation He put on human nature in the Person of Jesus, the Messiah, the second Person of the Godhead....
Jesus is God! He is equal with God. We can literally read John 1:1 this way: In the beginning was Jesus, and Jesus was with God, and Jesus is God. Jesus became incarnate––flesh: And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14).
What more proof do we need? Any person who rejects this truth is in spiritual darkness; they are not in the light. Who did Jesus declare Himself to be? John 8:12: “I am the Light of the world.” When a person accepts the fact that Jesus is deity, the Son of God, and they ask Him for forgiveness of their sin, what does He do for them? “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” Jesus saves them!
Whatever God is, Christ is. The very likeness of God, the very Godhead of Godhead, the very Deity of Deity, is in Christ Jesus.
