God Speaks

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son....
Hebrews 1:1-2

The book of Hebrews starts with God. As we study, we begin to see how the book of Hebrews is very much like the Gospel of John. In John 1:1, we are introduced to Christ as the “Logos.” We are taken to the very beginning to see that: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God. It is wonderful to see how 1 John 1:1, also starts by referring back to the beginning: That which was from the beginning... the Word of life, which is similar to the way the book of Genesis starts: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).

In the first verse of the book of Hebrews, we read: God, who at various times and various ways spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son.... The insight given to us is that God, since the beginning of time, has spoken to us. How does God speak to us? In the Old Testament, God used the prophets to speak to Israel. Do you remember the disobedience of the prophet Balaam? God even used a donkey to rebuke the stubborn prophet (Numbers 22:28-30).

There are other ways God speaks to us as well. Sometimes it is with a still, small voice (1 Kings 19:12). He speaks clearly to us through nature:

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard (Psalm 19:1-3).

God uses His angels as His messengers to people. In the past, Daniel, Zacharias and Mary received messages from angels. God speaks to people through dreams. He spoke to Joseph, Jacob’s son, though dreams (Genesis 37:5, 9), and to Joseph, Mary’s husband (Matthew 1:20-21).

In these Last Days, God has spoken to us through His Son Jesus Christ. God continues to speak to us primarily through His Word.

God is not silent. It is the nature of God to speak. The second person of the Holy Trinity is called the Word.
