Wanderers to Worshipers
Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
James 5:19-20
The book of James has not only been a great epistle to study, but it has given us many Christian principles that we must put into practice. We need to heed the important exhortations he taught. The power of the Holy Spirit will enable us to apply them to our lives.
James concluded his epistle powerfully. He was very concerned for anyone who had wandered away from the truth of God’s Word––people who had become ensnared in a worldly, backslidden lifestyle. They had left the Church to live a life of sin. They had once walked in the light, and through Christ, they had their sins forgiven, but now they returned to the darkness. Without renewed repentance, they will perish in their sin.
Usually when someone wanders away from the truth, it is a gradual moving away with the current of this wicked world. People are often unaware they are slowly drifting away. Even though they slide back into their old ways, their lives will never be the same. Believers who backslide cannot really enjoy sin, because the Holy Spirit is still convicting them.
James taught Christians to be open to the Holy Spirit’s leading when pursuing those who have wandered away from the truth. Battle on your knees in prayer for their souls. When given the opportunity, share the truth of God’s Word with them; it can turn them back to the Lord.
We need to have a heart, not only for the lost, but also for those who are backslidden. Pray for a passion to care about these people’s souls. When you share with them God’s truth, wanderers can be turned back to become worshipers.
Soul-winning is the chief business of the Christian minister; it should be the main pursuit of every true believer.
