Avoid Foolish Arguments
But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless. Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.
Titus 3:9-11
Paul once again hit hard on the subject of division. The best advice he gave to Titus and to us was not to enter into debates. People love to argue. Paul, who endured so much suffering and persecution from the Pharisees who resisted the Gospel message, had the wisdom and authority to tell us to, avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless.
Titus’ best defense against false teachers was to teach the Gospel truth! Once he had given them the truth of the Gospel, there was no need to talk to them anymore. Titus was not to waste his time. He had shared his heart in gentleness, trying to persuade them of the truth; but if they did not want to listen, and they wanted to argue, there was no more point to the conversation. He needed to reject divisive people and allow God to deal with their lives because they were in sin.
The advice for us is the same. Do not waste your time arguing with people, for that is all it is––a waste of time. You could be doing better things, more fruitful things, for the Lord. In fact, if you have shared the truth of the Scriptures with people in the church, and they continue in their divisiveness, you are to reject them.
Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them. Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests. By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people (Romans 16:17-18 NLT).
When a person moves away from the inerrancy of the Word of God, they have big problems, because they will believe the lie rather than the truth.
The devil's not fighting churches today, he's joining churches.
