The Power of the Holy Spirit
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:8
In Acts 1:8, we have the very last words that Jesus spoke to His disciples before leaving earth. He gave them words of comfort and vision. For 3½ years, the disciples had walked, eaten and slept alongside Him. They listened to Him preach and witnessed Him heal the people. The Twelve saw miraculous works. Now the Holy Spirit would work in their lives.
The Spirit of God is still actively working among believers today. Christians are empowered to be witnesses of Christ. The Greek word for power is dunamis; it means “ability,” “abundance,’” “might,” “worker of miracles,” and “to do wonders.” The word is sometimes translated “authority.”
The power of the Holy Spirit that God has given to us is used by His authority. When activated by faith, dunamis power causes action. Jesus gave direction as to how the power of His Spirit should be used––to be witnesses both close to home and far away. It is a power that does not come through our natural abilities. The Holy Spirit’s power is supernatural––it is given by God’s grace and love.
Jesus gave the promise of the Holy Spirit to His Church, but when I look at the body of Christ, I do not see His power at work in some of them. We need the power of His Spirit to overcome sin and to live the Christian life. I believe there are a lot of defeated Christians who suffer depression and oppression. Could this be a result of their inconsistencies, compromises and sin? Christians need to be consistent and victorious. We can be overcomers and experience God’s power.
Faithfully continue to walk with Christ, and then you will experience a life of love, joy and peace. Although we are not perfect, we aim for a high standard––holiness. When we enter eternity, we shall be perfect.
The victorious Christian neither exalts nor downgrades himself. His interests have shifted from self to Christ.
