Guided by the Holy Spirit

And as they went through the cities, they delivered to them the decrees to keep, which were determined by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem. So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily. Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them. So passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.
Acts 16:4-8

As Paul, Silas and Timothy went through the different cities visiting the churches, they continued to share the decisions made by the elders in Jerusalem. As they taught about salvation through God’s grace, the believers were strengthened and their numbers increased. The apostles’ faithful ministry caused the churches to bear much spiritual fruit.

A healthy church flourishes when pastors teach God’s Word. Believers are encouraged and strengthened, when they are well taught, not by always hearing emotional testimonies. Christian doctrine is important and must be taught, so believers can be rooted and grounded in God’s truth.

A healthy church is also empowered by the Holy Spirit. God used His Spirit to guide and direct believers. Paul and his company were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to go to preach the Word in Asia. God wanted them to go to Europe––toward Greece. How did they know? I believe, as we read the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit spoke to them through someone who had the gift of prophecy. God confirmed His will to Paul by not permitting him to go to Bithynia. Again, the Holy Spirit said no! They were directed by God in this way to Troas––an ancient port city.

When seeking the perfect will of God, you have to have the peace of God. If you have no peace, then I believe the Lord is showing you not to go. Yes, God wants you to go by faith, but if you do not have peace in your heart, then wait. His Spirit will faithfully guide you as you pray and wait. God, in His sovereignty, will show you in His time where to go.

Being filled and led by the Spirit may take you places you never planned; but the will of God will never lead you where the grace of God cannot keep you.
