Blessed Endurance
My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience. Indeed we count them blessed who endure.
James 5:10-11
James came to the whole point of this passage which was to help believers be patient while they endured the trials of this life. The word patience means “to be longsuffering, steadfast and enduring.” Christians can overcome the enslaving power of discouragement and defeat that Satan had been flooding over their souls. They could establish their hearts in the blessed hope of Christ’s coming.
He pointed them to the prophets who had suffered and died in the faith before them. These courageous men spoke in the name of the Lord and were persecuted for it. They had great patience and endurance as they faced their trials, because they had a surety of eternity:
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them (Hebrews 11:13-16).
The apostles also stood fast as they battled with trials and persecution because they thought it worthy to suffer for Christ’s name (Acts 5:41).
Believers will also go through times of suffering, but as they set their eyes on eternity, they will be steadfast and endure. It is good to build endurance in our lives because in the end, we will be blessed.
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
