“Whom Shall I Send?”
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
Isaiah 6:8
God used Peter, Stephen and Philip’s lives to preach the Gospel. While revival and persecution were happening, Philip was called to go to a deserted place to minister to just one man––an Ethiopian––the treasurer of Candace the queen of the Ethiopians. God’s plan was to begin another great work. So Philip left the multitudes to minister to only one person.
What did God know that Philip did not know? He knew that the Ethiopian man was reading the Word of God and searching for understanding. The Holy Spirit moved Philip from Samaria all the way to a desert place, right where the Ethiopian man’s chariot was! The Lord sent Phillip to him! Imagine that! Coincidence? I do not think so. The Lord knew this man was seeking Him.
So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. The place in the Scripture which he read was this: “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so He opened not His mouth. In His humiliation His justice was taken away, and who will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth” (Acts 8:30-33).
Who was Isaiah speaking about? He was speaking about Jesus Christ, but the Ethiopian man was ignorant. He had no knowledge or understanding of whom Isaiah spoke. Who was going to interpret the Scriptures for the Ethiopian man? Philip sat right alongside the man in his chariot! He was literally taken––snatched away by the Spirit––so that he could be a witness to him, so he could come to know Christ.
I have often taught the principle of ministering to the one. We are to be faithful, even if we are called upon to preach and share the Gospel with one person. Who knows what will happen––what spark of revival will be lit––if we are obedient to the call to share His message with one person?
Will you answer the call to go when God asks, “Whom shall I send?”
The Gospel is only good news if it gets there in time.
