Be Fair in the Workplace
Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.
Colossians 4:1
In the original manuscripts, this verse actually belongs to chapter three because it is a continuous thought and sentence. Before the Lord, employers have a great responsibility to treat their employees well. They are to be kind to their employees.
An employer needs to pay an employee what is just and fair. An employer should not cheat his employee, but pay them for what that individual person is worth. If you hire someone, and they have the capacity to enhance your business further, then pay them accordingly. Those in a position of authority over others should not use or misuse them. God is fair and just. He is watching from heaven; an employer is accountable to God for his or her actions.
In the book of Ruth, Boaz was a godly example as an employer. As a wealthy landowner, he treated the reapers in his field fairly and with much respect. The reapers also showed honor to their employer: Now behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, “The LORD be with you!” And they answered him, “The LORD bless you!” (Ruth 2:4). These hardworking men had a mutual respect for one another, and both were abundantly blessed.
As an employer, are you respectful to your employees, and do they respect you in return? Think about it. If employers treat their employees righteously, as Boaz did, God will be pleased. He is the One who blesses and prospers a person’s business.
I pray these lessons would not fall on deaf ears. May God help all of us to have a change of heart in the area of our work ethics. Determine in your heart to become better employers and employees.
He hath shown thee, O man, what is good: and what doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
~Micah 6:8 KJV~
