Amazing Acts of Faith
...who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
Hebrews 11:33-34
The heroes of faith became conquerors because they believed in the promises of God. Although not mentioned by name, who trusted the Lord to stop the mouths of lions? It was Daniel: “My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me...” (Daniel 6:22).
So what happened to Daniel? Why was he in this dangerous situation? King Darius reigned over Persia, including Babylon. He loved Daniel and placed him in a position of authority: ...Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm (Daniel 6:3).
Jealous men moved against Daniel. They formulated an evil plan that would get rid of him. However, they could not find fault in him because he was faithful. So they looked for another way to entrap him. They knew he was loyal to his God and decided to bring about a new, royal decree to be approved by the king. They manipulated him into signing a decree ordering that no one could pray to any other god. For thirty days, everyone had to pray to Darius the King or be thrown into the lions’ den. Once signed by the king, the decree could not be changed (Daniel 6:4-9).
By faith, Daniel continued to pray to God. So the governors and satraps reported to the king that he was guilty of breaking the decree. Saddened, the king set his heart to deliver Daniel, but the men held him to his signed decree. The command was given, and Daniel was placed in the lions’ den. The king encouraged Daniel: “Your God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver you.” The king prayed and fasted, but he could not sleep until he knew of Daniel’s fate (Daniel 6:10-18).
What happened? Early in the morning, the king hurried to the den, and cried out: “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually been able to deliver you?” His reply: “My God has sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths...” (Daniel 6:18-22). Amazing!
Daniel was taken up out of the den ... because he believed in his God.
