An Evident Progression
Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.
1 Timothy 4:15
What things was Timothy to meditate on? Paul the Apostle had previously told his young son in the faith to give attention to reading, exhortation, and doctrine. He needed to continually meditate upon all these things. This was the only way for him to grow in his knowledge of Christ.
Timothy, as a pastor, needed to give himself wholly to the study of God’s Word, not partially. He had a great responsibility in his God-given call to minister to the congregation. His listeners would see that, not only was he growing and profiting from his diligent studies, but they were also being spiritually fed and were profiting from his learning. He was indeed a worker who need not be ashamed: Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). God’s Word was a profit to everyone!
In following this same pattern of discipline––meditating on God’s Word––Philippians 4:8 gives us other things we are to meditate on:
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
What do you find yourself meditating on? Our minds often wander to focus on other things. We can focus on our worries, we can think about the bad news on the television, or we can entertain impure thoughts. Meditate on things that are noble, just, pure, lovely, good, virtuous, and praiseworthy. All these things are found in God’s Word. Then you will have lasting peace, spiritual growth, and a great appreciation of your salvation.
Blessed is the man [whose] delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.
~Psalm 1:2~
