Faithful Ministers and Servants
Tychicus, a beloved brother, faithful minister, and fellow servant in the Lord, will tell you all the news about me. I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that he may know your circumstances and comfort your hearts, with Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will make known to you all things which are happening here.
Colossians 4:7-9
Called to be an Apostle, Paul was God’s messenger. He cared for all the churches (2 Corinthians 11:28). In Colossians 1, Paul gave a warm greeting to the believers at Colosse. He also commended them for their steadfast faith in Christ. He taught them the preeminence of Christ and explained the doctrine of reconciliation. He told of his sacrificial service for Christ.
In Colossians 2, Paul declared the truth of Christ––not philosophy––not legalism. Believers had freedom and liberty through God’s grace, mercy and love. In Colossians 3, he taught how believers have been resurrected in Jesus Christ. He lives in them and through them. Christians are no longer to live in carnality––according to their sinful past life. As the elect of God, we are to put on the character of the new man in Christ.
Paul addressed the Christian home––a husband’s and wife’s duties, and how the children should behave. He also spoke of the responsibilities of masters and servants. Paul gave solid instruction on all kinds of different issues and topics. Yet the main theme of his letter was Jesus Christ. This is to be our first priority too. Christ must be in the center of our lives.
As Paul closed his letter to the Colossians, he included the names of those who helped him in the ministry. Even though Paul was in prison, he was blessed by the many people who loyally loved him. They loved God and remained steady and on course in the call to ministry.
Are you a faithful minister and servant of Christ in the ministry? It is a blessing to see people investing their time and lives in the ministry. They faithfully serve the Lord in the Sunday school, as ushers or greeters. Over the years, they have endured many storms, but they still remain faithful.
The aim and result of faithful, fruitful, and fulfilling service is to make God famous.
