Redeem the Time
Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
Colossians 4:5-6
Paul exhorted the Colossians to walk in wisdom. He spoke of their conduct. This meant that they were to constantly walk in God’s wisdom, and they were never to stop.
We need to pray to God, asking Him to lead our Christian walk through His wisdom. Living in this sinful world, we must rely upon the wisdom of God like never before. Read the Proverbs. There is so much wisdom to glean from them for our everyday lives.
What did Paul mean when he spoke about those who were outside? He was referring to those in the world. These are everyday people whom you come in contact with that need to hear the wisdom of God and the Gospel of Christ. When you come in contact with them in the supermarket, school, beaches or mountains, seek opportunities to share with them. Our words should not be offensive, but graceful.
What does it mean to redeem the time? The word redeem means “to buy up the time.” Never waste time because your days are numbered. Our lifetime is so short; it moves so rapidly––time flies! Seriously, why waste time being idle when you could be doing something with eternal value for the Lord? When you spend time in prayer, you are redeeming the time. Through prayer, God will open doors of opportunity.
When God gives to you an open door, then, by faith, walk through it. It may be an opportunity to pray with someone or to share the Gospel. If God closes a door, stay out, do not push it open, and wait on the Lord for another opportunity––another open door.
As we are living in the Last Days, we need to buy up the time. It is a season full of opportunities. Every day, live with this mindset––this might be the last day I have to live on earth––then eternity.
If you have not the time, God gave it to you, and you must have spent it.
