Go! Preach the Gospel

“But you [Christ’s Disciples and followers] shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:8

This is a tremendous Scripture. These are the very last words of Christ spoken to His disciples and to us, before He ascended into a cloud out of sight (Acts 1:9). Jesus gave His disciples direction, comfort and vision. He gave them a promise of the Comforter and of His power. The Spirit of God was going to work mightily in their lives.

Jesus gave the command to His Church to be witnesses. Sadly, I do not see the power of the Holy Spirit working in many churches today. Yet Jesus has given each believer the power to overcome sin and to be a witness at work, at school, or whatever you are traveling. The word power in the Greek language is dunamis; the word means miraculous power, strength, might, energy or ability to do marvelous works. This same power active in the early church is available to us. It is a word of action, as we step out by faith. It does not come by natural abilities; it is a supernatural power given by God.

Many Christians live defeated lives; others are inconsistent in their Christian walk. The Christian life is not one of constant defeat and backsliding. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that we can become victorious. We will not be perfect, but we must not continue in a life of sin. We are to repent from sin! The Christian’s life has the fruit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, as we continue forward to know the Lord (Galatians 5:22-23).

Understand, the book of Acts does not have an “Amen” at the end. It continues on––working in the same way from generation to generation–– until the Lord Jesus Christ comes again for the second time. We are considered to be people of the book of Acts!

The Christian's birthright is the power of the Holy Ghost.
