Passing Through by Faith

By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned.
Hebrews 11:29

Imagine, from Joseph’s family, about 72 people traveled to Egypt. When Moses was called to lead them out of Egypt, there were about 3.5 million people. They had greatly multiplied. As they approached the Red Sea, all of a sudden, they saw the Egyptian army pursing them. Pharaoh had changed his mind and decided that he would not let them go!

The people were terrified! They reached the edge of the Red Sea, but there was nowhere to go. Mountain ranges were on either side of them–– so the only thing left to do was to look up toward God for deliverance. The Lord said to Moses, “What is that in your hand?” God told him to touch the Red Sea with his staff. By faith, he stepped into the water and touched the water with his staff. All of a sudden, the Red Sea split open, and water heaped up on either side. The people must have seen an open aquarium while they, by faith, passed through the Red Sea on dry ground. What a miracle!

Once the last Hebrew was out of the opened water, the Egyptians rushed into the Red Sea. God waited for the perfect time––when Pharaoh’s army was in the midst of the sea––and ordered Moses to stretch his hand over the water (Exodus 14:26). When the waters returned, the entire army was engulfed and drowned in the Red Sea.

Moses and Israel sang a song (Exodus 15:1-19), and Miriam and her maidens answered them, singing, “...for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!” (Exodus 15:20-21).

Listen, God will sometimes bring us to the edge of the waters––a place where there is no way out––because He desires that we look only to Him for deliverance.

We cannot imagine how we will escape from danger. What we do not know, our Lord knows.
