A Missionary Called to Africa
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
Isaiah 6:8
There are many men and women who have been called to be missionaries. A Scottish man named David Livingstone became a missionary to Africa.
Dr. David Livingstone is a legend among explorers and adventurers, a true example of North Sea strength and Scottish grit. During his incredible life, Livingstone undertook three major expeditions into the Dark Heart of Africa, travelling a phenomenal 29,000 miles, a greater distance than the circumference of the earth. Achieving this in any circumstance is incredibly impressive, but doing so in the 19th century, during the Victorian era when almost nothing was known about the interior of Africa, is astonishing.
It has been recorded that for all the years that David Livingstone spent in Africa, he only gained one African convert, a tribal leader called Sechele––the chief of the Kwena people of Botswana.
Did you know that as a church, we support missionaries in Africa? Pastor Vincent, a native of Uganda, and Melissa Aniku from California have been called as husband and wife to minister the Gospel to a Muslim community in Uganda. Vincent has said, “These people are so open to the Gospel.”
The name of the church is Calvary Chapel Midigo. They minister to at least 700 children and have a growing women’s ministry. God is using the avenue of soccer, a loved sport in Uganda, to reach troubled men. This married couple faithfully continues to spread the Gospel throughout Africa.
The Apostle Philip was called to minister to one Ethiopian man; David Livingstone gained one African convert; and Vincent has answered the call to be a missionary to hundreds in Uganda. Will you answer God’s call to be a missionary––even to the one? If you are not called to go, pray about supporting a missionary.
"I have sometimes seen, in the morning sun, the smoke of a thousand villages where no missionary has ever been."
