Preach the Gospel

“...Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”
Mark 16:15

God uses men and women who are full of faith and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Throughout history, many have answered the call to become missionaries. For instance, a Scottish man named David Livingstone became a missionary to Africa.

Livingstone undertook three major expeditions into the Dark Heart of Africa, travelling a phenomenal 29,000 miles, a greater distance than the circumference of the earth. Achieving this in any circumstance is incredibly impressive, but doing so in the 19th-century, during the Victorian era when almost nothing was known about the interior of Africa, is astonishing.

It has been recorded that for all the years that David Livingstone spent in Africa, he only gained one African convert––a tribal leader called Sechele, the chief of the Bakwena tribe, part of the Tswana people, in what is now called Botswana.

Although a controversial figure, this tribal leader became a missionary to his own people and influenced other tribes toward Christianity. It has been said by historians that Sechele did more to spread Christianity in 19th-century southern Africa than almost any single European missionary.

Another famed missionary was Amy Carmichael. If you have never read her book A Chance to Die, it is a good read. She was born in the village of Millisle, on the north coast of Ireland. At age twelve, she was sent to a boarding school in Yorkshire, England, where she accepted the Lord as her Savior. After the death of her father, the family settled in England.

One day, when thumbing through her journal, the words of Matthew 28:19 KJV, caught her attention: “Go ye.” She sensed the Lord calling her to missions. She served in Japan, but eventually went to India where she served the Lord for the rest of her life (1895-1951).

Do you have the call to “Go ye?” Then you, too, have a chance to die.

Missionary life is simply a chance to die.
