Fools Say There Is No God
The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
Psalm 14:1 KJV
Today is April Fools’ Day, and although not a legal holiday, it is celebrated across the world. It is believed to have begun in 1700 in Britain, when some young pranksters began to play tricks on each other. April Fools’ Day spread throughout Britain during the 18th century. Others believe it came from Geoffrey Chaucer’s book, The Canterbury Tales, from 1392.
However, God’s Word has a lot to say about fools. Refusing to believe there is a God, despite all the seen evidence of Creation right in front of a person, makes them a fool. What does the Bible declare about God? The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork (Psalm 19:1). Oh, fool, can you not see the handiwork of God all about you?
Jesus often taught parables to the people gathered about Him. These stories related to their everyday lives. The Parable of the Rich Fool is told in Luke 12:13-21. It tells the story of a rich man who stored away much treasure in his life. He had this foolish philosophy: “ ‘...take your ease; eat, drink and be merry’ ” (Luke 12:19). He felt a false security. What he did not know as he laid down that night, was that God would require his soul! He would die, leaving all his riches on earth and having no riches laid up for himself in eternity––he was spiritually bankrupt.
Many people today live by this same, foolish philosophy: “Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die!” But this is not the only life a person has, because man has an eternal soul. After death, a person will either enter into eternal life in heaven or suffer eternity in hell––a second death.
Do not remain a fool in this life. Be wise and seek out the truth about God in the Bible. There you will find that there is a God––the Creator of heaven and earth, the One who loves you and desires you to know Him.
I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how a man could look up into the heavens and say there is no God.
