Is Christ Divided?
For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? - 1 Corinthians 1:11-13
Paul had begun to hear about the contention among the believers in the church of Corinth. Among themselves they had chosen their favorite leader. Notice Paul’s common sense questions to them, and then think about this one important question he said: “Is Christ divided?” We really do not need an explanation for any of Paul’s questions. He is simply pointing them back to Christian unity.
When people begin to choose and follow their own favored leaders, division begins. If we begin to name and identify with only certain teachers, then we become no different than the Corinthian believers.
Pastors and teachers are not to make a name for themselves. Neither are they to make disciples for themselves––bottom line. So many people want to be something when they are not. We should always be little––humble before Christ. If the Lord becomes the main person in your life; then you will remain small in comparison with Christ. That is important because the more humble you are before God; the more He can use you.
Seriously, if people have to constantly mention your name and talk about you all the time, then something is wrong. We have to remember we are just His vessels––His servants. God can do whatever He wants to do with our lives. He is the One who gives to us the knowledge and wisdom in everything we do and say. He is the One who has called us and anointed us. We should always be speaking about Christ.
And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
