Godly Fear toward Christian Leadership
So Samuel did what the Lord said, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come peaceably?” And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.
1 Samuel 16:4-5
Notice, when God’s people saw Samuel coming to Bethlehem, there remained a godly fear of him as a leader in Israel. The elders of the town asked him, “Do you come peaceably?” Samuel told them he had come to sacrifice to the Lord. As he invited Jesse and his sons to attend the sacrifice, he was obediently following all that God had told him to do.
In Numbers 12, Miriam and Aaron showed no godly fear when they challenged the authority of their brother Moses. Who had anointed Moses and spoke with him? God! Although not a perfect man, God had ordained Moses as the leader of His people. His siblings had become too familiar and comfortable with him.
Miriam and Aaron came against Moses for a family issue. Moses had married an Ethiopian woman. They believe he was no longer in tune with God, but they were. They failed to see God’s anointing in his life. God was not pleased with Miriam or Aaron. She was struck with leprosy––a type of sin. Moses interceded for his sister so she could be healed.
At times, churches and Christian organizations can fail when people do not recognize God’s anointing on a leader’s life. There needs to be a godly fear towards those in leadership. Those who are not afraid to speak against God’s leaders do not fear God. Pride has crept into their lives.
If you get too familiar with a leader, you may see their weaknesses and be tempted to think they are no longer anointed by God. Do not lose your godly fear of them and come to the point where you think God is not speaking to them anymore, but He is speaking to you!
“Do not touch My anointed ones, and do My prophets no harm.”
