Bold as a Lion
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.”
1 Samuel 17:34-36
Saul thought David to be too young to face Goliath the giant in battle, but David assured Saul of his fighting abilities. In protecting his father’s sheep, he had managed to kill a lion and bear. Even when the lion turned to attack David, he was able to take hold of its beard and kill it. David was so brave. He certainly was not afraid of Goliath––he was as bold as a lion himself.
Notice another great quality of David’s character; he had such a pure heart. The sole purpose for going out into battle was because the name of the Lord had been put to shame. David was not seeking self-glory. In fact, there was another danger. If Israel’s enemies heard that the Philistines had defeated Israel, then those nations would also come against them.
As a Christian, are you bold like David? God’s children should never fear. Hebrews 13:6 reminds us to be bold: So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Another Scripture,Proverbs 28:1, describes our bold actions: …the righteous are bold as a lion.
In the face of persecution, the Apostle Paul asked other believers to always pray for him. He needed boldness: …that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel (Ephesians 6:19).
When we preach Christ crucified, we have no reason to stammer, or stutter, or hesitate, or apologize; there is nothing in the Gospel of which we have any cause to be ashamed.
