The Holy Spirit at Work

“...for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Acts 1:5

In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would only come upon certain people, such as Moses, who was chosen to deliver God’s people from Egypt, and the seventy elders to help him lead them:

“Gather to Me [God] seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you [Moses] know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you ... I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone” (Numbers 11:16-17).

God’s Spirit worked in the life of Joshua, the next chosen leader of Israel: And the LORD said to Moses: “Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him...” (Numbers 27:18). The Spirit of God came upon Samson and gave him miraculous strength:

Now to his [Samson’s] surprise, a young lion came roaring against him. And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand (Judges 14:5-6).

Today, according to the grace of God, the Holy Spirit comes upon every individual that accepts Jesus as Savior of their lives:

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God (1 Corinthians 2:12).

We cannot do the work of God in our own strength or live the Christian life without the empowering of the Holy Spirit. We need His help!

When we pray for the Spirit's help ... we will simply fall down at the Lord's feet in our weakness. There we will find the victory and power that comes from His love.
