Setting Our Godly Priorities
…if the peoples of the land brought wares or any grain to sell on the Sabbath day, we would not buy it from them on the Sabbath, or on a holy day; and we would forego the seventh year’s produce and the exacting of every debt. - Nehemiah 10:31
The heathen people in Jerusalem were allowed to set up shop to sell produce on the Sabbath day. Now the leaders of Israel told these idolaters that, from now on, they no longer could sell produce on the Sabbath day––it was the Lord’s Day. God had commanded:
Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates (Exodus 20:9-10).
For us, the Sabbath is not Saturday or Sunday; it can be any day of the week. We do not treat any day differently. Romans 14:5-6 clarifies for us:
One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it….
Colossians 2:16 also tells us: So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths…
Whatever day you have chosen to go to church, it is important to worship the Lord with other people. Set godly priorities, and do not allow your golf, surfing or other hobbies to take you away from hearing God’s Word. Some parents allow their children to remain in bed; they tell them they do not have to go to church. Yes they do! How else will they learn God’s Word?
Church attendance is as vital to a disciple as a transfusion of rich, healthy blood to a sick man.
