Head To Head

May 19, 2023

The Church, made up of all believers, is the Bride of Christ, and as such we are to submit to Him in whatever He calls us to do. Christ loves His bride, so much so that He died for her, and this love is revealed to us throughout Scripture. So we now have a choice to either go head to head with Him who loves us, or let Him be the head of His Church and submit to His will.

God loves us because of who we are regardless of what we do. When we accept the fact that we are loved, the doing follows and we can then obey Him and love others. Instead of focusing on doing in order to define our being, we need to let our being determine our doing.

A battle cross to mark the place of a death does not mean much to people who did not know that person, but it symbolizes a great loss to those who knew them. Jesus died on a cross to win a battle for us but it only means something if we are in relationship with Him.

Following Jesus requires us to jump all in, not looking back or letting anything else take our loyalty. Even if we stumble and don’t do things perfectly, we can still be moving forward as long as we keep our eyes on Him and ultimately yield to His calling

In years past, and possibly you’ve seen this in a grandparent’s living room – people would keep the plastic wrapping around a piece of furniture for as long as they could in hopes they could preserve the newness. It wasn’t very comfortable to sit on and its original design was being wasted. Much in the same way is our walk with God. At first new, but we’re asked to share our faith in some way with others…to be used by God. But unlike the furniture…as we give ourselves to others God keeps creating newness in us.  New and Used.

God is not as concerned about whether or not He offends people as much as He is concerned about us living a righteous life. Sometimes that takes discipline and pain to bring us back to right living, but when we follow Him the benefits far outweigh the difficulties.

Scripture warns men and women against common temptations that we all face when it comes to matters of chasing each other. Ultimately, we could all save ourselves a mess of consequences if we chased God first above all else and trusted Him to put relationships back together or into place.

After following Jesus – the Bible says that we are to be ‘salt and light’. Not hide. How often and how tempting it is to rely on God’s grace and mercy to be our pass to flirt with the ways of the world and begin to hide His light in us. While it isn’t the easiest thing to do, following Jesus and loving Him above everything else is what being a part of His Kingdom is about. It’s our choice.

God gives us plenty of warning signs through His Scripture, His people and the Holy Spirit. We have to heed these warnings to avoid the consequences of disobedience, and spread these warnings to those we love to help them avoid the ultimate consequence of hell.

The Bible tells us that the last days are coming and there are many people who will not be ready. We are given instruction through Scripture so that we can be ready, but also so that we can live our lives pleasing to God.

The world offers nothing that can satisfy us and yet we continue to search for things of this world. Jesus says that He is the Bread of Life and it is only in Him that we can find satisfaction. We must stop filling ourselves with worldly things and fill ourselves with Him so that we may have eternal life.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
