One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? The concepts of sin and being justified by grace as a gift have all become too familiar, like a well-worn teddy bear. Pastor Josh teaches on the dangers of familiarity. We need a fresh insight into the same truth so it hits us anew.

We tend to think of our identity as being on a voyage of self discovery. But Christians are on a journey to become more like Jesus. Our task is not to "find ourselves" but to become who were made to be.

We tend to live in an honor/shame paradigm. You see it in social media where we watch how many likes we get to see if we're being honored or shamed. But Jesus' mission has been accomplished, and therefore we are secure and we don't need to strive for honor and fight against shame.

We make Jesus small when he is big. We complicate it because we don't appreciate his majesty. Pastor Josh teaches that faith involves surrender to and dependence on someone.

Jesus is expanding the horizon and speaking about eternal life. That's hard for us to do because we're constantly bombarded by things happening right now and we want everything on demand. We need to get back to what life is really all about.

One way of summarizing Jesus' prayer here is that it's the greatest prayer ever prayed that comes after the greatest sermon ever preached! It contains both intercession and instruction, and it reveals Jesus' heart for us.

Jesus uses the picture of vines being pruned to illustrate our being disciplined. Jesus is saying he's the fulfillment of all God wanted from his people in the Old Testament, and if we abide in Him, we'll bear much fruit.
