One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? Jesus uses the picture of vines being pruned to illustrate our being disciplined. Jesus is saying he's the fulfillment of all God wanted from his people in the Old Testament, and if we abide in Him, we'll bear much fruit.

The very difficulty we all experience at times getting along with our spouses is God's way of showing that in Christ it can be done. Marriage was designed by God right from the beginning to speak of God's love for the church. When you see a healthy marriage, the way they love and respect one another, it speaks of Christ's profound love for His people.

Paul discusses the significance of family life. Family is to be a little church, and the Church is to be a big family. Paul wants the family to reflect the purposes of God just as the Church does. God's purposes for His people extend right to the very intimate and practical life of the family.

This passage frees the employee to work hard. Christians should be the best employees on the face of the planet. But the boss is not master-less; he or she serves the master as well. Even the boss has accountability as to how he or she treats others.

We need to get out of the trap of viewing work as separate category from what happens at church, and stop thinking of it as what happens from 9 to 5. Our work often defines us and our identity. We need to see how work can be spiritual by orienting our work around our service of God. Our identity is in Christ first, and out of that flows our work.

If you're a Christian, you are a part of the church and you're going to want to be with the church. The Bible has no concept of a lone Christian; we are always part of the Jesus community.

Christian suffering has a purpose because it is incomparable to glory. It is like childbirth and it is God's plan for our glory to come. It points to the certainty of what is ours in Christ in heaven.

There's a certain controlling mindset that characterizes those outside of Christ. That doesn't mean that they indulge in obvious public evil, but at its root, this attitude is hostile to God and it continues the rebellion begun by Adam and Eve.

The subject we are addressing has been transformative for many religious and non-religious people. The righteousness of God revealed brings hope and praise.
