The Jesus Who Surprises - II

December 7, 2021

When Jesus walked this earth, He was full of surprises. Remember when He surprised Cleopas and his friend who were grieving His death on the road to Emmaus? On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dee Brestin, the author of The Jesus Who Surprises: Opening Our Eyes to His Presence in All of Life and Scripture, says that sometimes our troubles can blind us to the fact that Jesus is just three feet away.

Bringing Up Boys
With so much confusion about the role of men in society, it’s no wonder we have questions about how to bring up boys in the right way. Why are so many young males in crisis? What qualities should we be instilling in our sons? The culture has vilified masculinity, and as a result, an entire generation of boys is growing up without a clear idea of what it means to be a man. To help parents confront this challenge, the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute has developed a new 10-day email series based on Dr. Dobson’s best-selling book, Bringing Up Boys. It’s designed to equip you to wisely lead your sons to become godly men.

When Dee Brestin was grieving the death of her husband of 39 years and feeling abandoned, she was reminded of the moment when she was attempting to nurse her colicky baby son. After kicking and crying for 10 minutes, he finally calmed down and latched on. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dee says that, like the colicky baby, there’s no reason for us to throw a fit. God is with us.

“Wokeness” is a modern-day heresy which is incompatible with Christianity, according to theologian Dr. Owen Strachan, author of Christianity and Wokeness: How the Social Justice Movement Is Hijacking the Gospel. While its divisive rhetoric employs some biblical vocabulary and concepts, it is indeed an alternative religion, both in its methods and outcome. A potent blend of racism, moral relativism, and grievance, “wokeness” undermines the unifying work of the Holy Spirit. It is, therefore, anti-gospel, and Dr. Strachan offers a strategy to oppose it.

Theologian Dr. Owen Strachan joins Dr. James Dobson to discuss “Critical Race Theory” (CRT) and how it does not align with Christian beliefs. They discuss Dr. Strachan’s new book, Christianity and Wokeness: How the Social Justice Movement is Hijacking the Gospel, and peel back the layers of this misguided movement, its origins, and how the Bible contradicts it by teaching that we are all one family in God’s Kingdom.

Many teenage girls and women wish they had a better relationship with their dads. But fathers are often hesitant to talk with their daughters about things that really matter, as if they’d rather do nothing at all than do it wrong. Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield, author of Let’s Talk: Conversation Starters for Dads and Daughters, shares with co-host Dr. Tim Clinton about how dads can begin to have meaningful conversations with their daughters. Girls tend to figure things out and feel valued as they can talk it through. Dr. Watson Canfield provides easy ways for dads to facilitate discussion and dive into their daughters’ struggles, hurts, fears, and hopes.

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Kelly Shackelford, President of First Liberty Institute, sounds the alarm on “court packing,” which is one party loading the judiciary with justices whom they think will side with their agenda. If the judiciary simply rubber-stamps the whims of the legislative branch, America will inevitably plummet toward communism. Find out how to get involved and defend your religious rights before it is too late.

Religious liberty has been at the heart of many judicial cases in recent years, both at the state level and in the federal judiciary. That trend came front and center in 2021. On today’s edition of Family Talk, attorney Kelly Shackelford, President of First Liberty Institute, shares the latest examples of his organization fighting for the rights and beliefs of churches during the COVID pandemic and beyond. If those who are hoping to remove religion from the public square are able to remove our “first freedom,” all our rights are in jeopardy!

Before ancient Israel met its final judgment, God sent prophetic signs to warn the Jewish people to return to their Creator. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Messianic Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, author of The Harbinger, declares that the Lord is using the identical template of harbingers on American soil, calling us to return to Him in repentance. Beginning with 9/11 to the redefinition of marriage and the emergence of COVID-19, God is shaking us to our core. Will we ever repent? Now, while in a breath-taking freefall, we’ve not only called evil good, but the culture delights in cancelling God's people.

Sadly, the art of hospitality is mostly lost in today’s busy world. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson invites his wife and daughter into the studio to discuss the finer points of gracious hosting. Shirley and Danae Dobson, co-authors of Welcome to Our Table, discuss the importance of hospitality and breaking bread together. They point to Romans 12:13, which says, “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” As you open your home and heart over a home-cooked meal, you are extending the love and comfort of your family which might even change a life. Whether it’s on Thanksgiving Day or just a typical Friday, your guests will experience God’s love through you. Thankfully, fancy silverware is not required.

For a Christian, Thanksgiving should be a lot more than just food, family, and football. On today’s special edition of Family Talk, Pastor Chuck Swindoll, in a timeless sermon on the topic gratitude, reflects on Psalm 103, in which King David thanks God for pardoning his sin, redeeming his life from the pit, and crowning him with love and compassion. The hymn “It Is Well with My Soul” reveals why we are so grateful. “My sin, not in part but the whole; Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more; Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!” That’s true redemption indeed!

When Kansas State All-American offensive lineman Dalton Risner was asked by a prospective NFL team what his priorities would be as a professional football player, he responded, “Jesus Christ, family, and football,” in that order. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the star athlete, who has found a home with the Denver Broncos, says that he puts his faith over fear. He even has some of his favorite Bible verses tattooed on his arms, including Psalm 37:5, which says, “Commit your way to the Lord.” Risner’s desire is to use the NFL platform to spread God’s Word through love and kindness.
