His voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. - Revelation 1:15

The breakers still pound on the shore of the beautiful island of Patmos, scattering surf like crystal stars along the sandy slopes. John, the prisoner, would have been encouraged by the sound of that mighty pounding. It would have reminded him of the rhythm of God’s creation, held in order by the One in control. As surely as the waves chase each other ashore, so is God’s order established in the world. God’s blessings, like the  waves, roll inexorably onward.

John was encouraged by his belief that God would chase his plans into being and make sure they reached the point of no return, sweeping their way up the sandy beaches of people’s lives. When John “turned to see who was speaking” to him (Revelation 1:12), he struggled for a valid expression of what he had heard. The best way he found to describe the voice of God was to compare it to “mighty ocean waves”—the mightiest surf that ever pounded a seashore, the biggest breaker ever to break loose of its brothers, the wildest wave ever to dash the bed of the ocean.

Next time you stand at a waterfall, think about that. Then, when you get to heaven, you will recognize his voice! Christ’s voice was greater than the thunder of the breakers on Patmos and carried with it the force of many waterfalls. It was a voice to be reckoned with. “Anyone who is willing to hear should listen,” said John (Revelation 3:22).
