The Hidden Life

October 6, 2020

When we think of the “heroes of the faith,” we tend to focus on the tasks they accomplished and the people they encouraged—but the things they accomplished on their feet wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t spent time on their knees in prayer. Even Elijah had to start somewhere! He was a shepherd in a small town who cultivated “the hidden life” of prayer before God called him to change his world.

In this message, Jill walks us through Elijah’s story, before the majestic displays of God’s glory on Mount Carmel, to a life fueled by prayer and trust in the Lord.

How’s your prayer life? Are your prayers childish, easily distracted, unfocused and lacking in passion, seeing prayer as a way to get what you want? Or are they heartfelt, fervent, and effective... prayer that works? Drawing from the prophet Elijah’s fervent prayer life and his prayers for rain in a drought, Jill guides us in becoming great “pray-ers” and encourages us that effective prayer takes time and work but is completely worthwhile.

“What is God’s will for my life?” It’s a serious question that is asked by believers of all ages facing all kinds of decisions and uncertainty. As Jill Briscoe explains, you cannot know the will of God until you find God and get to know Him personally—or at least slow down long enough for Him to find you!  God does not intend for His will to be a mystery to us. In fact, He makes it perfectly clear in His Word. What can we learn from the stories of the Bible... from how Jesus handled certain situations? A great deal!  Through this teaching, you’ll learn how you can know God’s will for your life and then begin to apply it in practical ways. Are you ready to surrender your plans if it means you will accomplish His?

Do you believe that some sin is too big for God to forgive? Do you wonder if someone who has sinned can be restored and renewed? Can God use them again? Can God use you again?  Be comforted. There is "life after sin," as Jill Briscoe shows us by exploring the life of David. In Psalm 51, David writes about turning around and running into the arms of the loving, merciful, compassionate God who was waiting for him, waiting to take him back. Do you need to turn and run in to the arms of God? He's waiting for you, too.

Giant Temptation comes to all of us. All of us know him. He knows us—he knows when our guard is up, and he knows when we’re feeling lazy. It’s in our times of laziness that we’re faced with temptations that we’re not prepared for, and we, like David, have to choose whether to go along with the giant of temptation or to get off the rooftop.  Have you experienced a time when you've failed to overcome a temptation? Jill Briscoe shows us that the value of David's life story is not only that it shows man's great sin, but that it shows God's even greater forgiveness and grace.

There is a battle going on around us. Do you realize that? We are fighting a battle against the foes of the Lord. Maybe you've felt this battle in the giants you're facing in life, the problems that bog you down. Here's the good news: God calls, equips, and empowers His servants for the good fight of faith against the giants of this world.  David's story is a perfect illustration of God calling His people to face different giants throughout life. In this message, Jill Briscoe shows us how God equipped David with everything he needed to be victorious in each battle. If we allow Him to work through us, God will equip us, too.

Does anyone ever ask, “How are you?” and you reply, “Well, under the circumstances....” The problem is that’s exactly where we are living—under the circumstances! How do we rise above the adversity and sing a song of praise? From the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, Jill Briscoe shows us how Hannah, under very difficult circumstances, found the secret.

In Bible times, when a person had leprosy, they would use rags to cover their open sores because they were very contagious. In the book of Isaiah, it says that all of our righteous acts are like filthy rags—like the unclean rags used by people with leprosy. So if our good acts can never be righteous to God, then how can we live in Heaven? In this message, Jill teaches about our Jehovah Sidqenu, which means "Jesus is my righteousness." She lets us know how we can be righteous in God's eyes.

Sheep rely on their shepherd to love them, lead them, and give them food and water. In this same way, we can depend on the Lord to be our shepherd, and he will love us, lead us, and provide nourishment for our soul. In this message, Jill talks about God as our Jehovah Ro'i, or shepherd, so we can know what wonderful things God provides for us, His sheep.
