Praying for the Family

August 2, 2017

It's easy to get discouraged when we're praying for a family member or a loved one and we just don't see God answering our prayers. In those times, we might tend to tell God how and when He should answer the prayer instead of having faith that His answer to our prayers might be in a way or at a time that is different than we imagine—but better!

In this message, Jill gives us the example of Elijah and the widow and her son at Zarephath. Sharing her own personal stories, Jill encourages us to keep praying for our loved ones in any circumstances.

When we think of the "heroes of the faith," we tend to focus on the tasks they accomplished and the people they encouraged—but the things they accomplished on their feet wouldn't have happened if they hadn't spent time on their knees in prayer. Even Elijah had to start somewhere! He was a shepherd in a small town who cultivated "the hidden life" of prayer before God called him to change his world.  In this message, Jill walks us through Elijah's story, before the majestic displays of God's glory on Mount Carmel, to a life fueled by prayer and trust in the Lord.

How's your prayer life? Are your prayers childish, easily distracted, unfocused and lacking in passion, seeing prayer as a way to get what you want? Or are they heartfelt, fervent, and effective... prayer that works? Drawing from the prophet Elijah's fervent prayer life and his prayers for rain in a drought, Jill guides us in becoming great "pray-ers" and encourages us that effective prayer takes time and work but is completely worthwhile.

When the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, we receive all of Him into all of us. But did you know that we can abuse Him? He is abused when we suppress Him, quench Him, or subdue Him. Limiting Him to only certain areas of our lives is considered abuse... and a sin.

In us there is a well of water that continually quenches our thirst. It is the Holy Spirit that flows like a stream in our hearts. When we call on Him, the river overflows and refreshes our souls, enabling us to do God's work without getting burnt out.

In the Scriptures, oil is used as a symbol of joy and gladness. And we as Christians have a little pot of oil in us that will never run dry. The Holy Spirit is the oil in our lamps that keeps us burning, allowing us to be a light in this dark world.

Jesus said it was better that He leave earth so the Holy Spirit could come. He was one body amongst the people, but the Spirit would come to live inside of us. The Holy Spirit acts as a Fire that sets our souls ablaze and gives us the power to do things that are beyond our own strength.

What's a parent to do with a child in this day and age? What's a child to do with a parent? The New Testament says that children are to obey their parents, for this is right. Parents are told not to "exasperate" their children (Eph. 6:3-4). That means don't drive them up the wall! Instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.  Is this possible in this present evil age? Jill Briscoe looks at Proverb 31:1-9 to find answers to some of these questions.

God came in Christ to offer us forgiveness through the cross. He rose again the third day and set about bringing the world back home. "Talk to me," says the Father. "Prayer is the means; I have made a way." But there is a problem—we don't know how.

A bewildered human race is like a man lost in a forest asking, "Father, are you there?" In 1945, at the end of World War 2, Helmut Thielicke, a brilliant theologian, preaching through the Lord's Prayer to what was left of his congregation in the ruins of his church in Stuttgart said, "Everything will be all right so long as we hear His good voice calling to us above the howling of the wolves, above the sound of branches snapping, above the ominous noises around us. God is always there." A Christian worldview believes in the Fatherhood of God.

Have you ever noticed how kids try to hide things they've done wrong—a broken family heirloom, a bad report card, or a dent in the car? As much as he or she tries to hide the mistake, most often the parents find out. The same is true of our sin. As much as we try to bury our sin, God always knows about it. But how do we confront it? In this message by Jill, she teaches us what to do with sin so that we can make God the true ruler of our lives.
