Fire on the Mountain

September 6, 2019

In the story of Elijah, God answers Elijah’s prayer and sends fire from heaven down to Elijah’s altar, in order to show the people of Israel that He is the one and only true God. This is just one example of how God answers prayer.

In this message, Jill uses the analogy of an altar and describes twelve components that make up our relationship with God. It’s a way of helping us understand how God can send “fire” down to our altars to answer our prayers.

It’s easy to get discouraged when we’re praying for a family member or a loved one and we just don’t see God answering our prayers. In those times, we might tend to tell God how and when He should answer the prayer instead of having faith that His answer to our prayers might be in a way or at a time that is different than we imagine—but better! In this message, Jill gives us the example of Elijah and the widow and her son at Zarephath. Sharing her own personal stories, Jill encourages us to keep praying for our loved ones in any circumstances.

When we think of the “heroes of the faith,” we tend to focus on the tasks they accomplished and the people they encouraged—but the things they accomplished on their feet wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t spent time on their knees in prayer. Even Elijah had to start somewhere! He was a shepherd in a small town who cultivated “the hidden life” of prayer before God called him to change his world.  In this message, Jill walks us through Elijah’s story, before the majestic displays of God’s glory on Mount Carmel, to a life fueled by prayer and trust in the Lord.

How’s your prayer life? Are your prayers childish, easily distracted, unfocused and lacking in passion, seeing prayer as a way to get what you want? Or are they heartfelt, fervent, and effective... prayer that works? Drawing from the prophet Elijah’s fervent prayer life and his prayers for rain in a drought, Jill guides us in becoming great “pray-ers” and encourages us that effective prayer takes time and work but is completely worthwhile.

When you come to familiar Scriptures, do you tend to pass them by? Most of us have heard Psalm 23, describing the Shepherd’s relationship with His sheep. Take time and allow the Lord to give you a fresh revelation on these verses as Jill Briscoe shares her heart and perspective on one of her favorite passages in Scripture.

Does anyone ever ask, “How are you?” and you reply, “Well, under the circumstances....” The problem is that’s exactly where we are living—under the circumstances! How do we rise above the adversity and sing a song of praise? From the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, Jill Briscoe shows us how Hannah, under very difficult circumstances, found the secret.

Even though the Bible continues to be the leading best seller, fewer people are actually reading it. That's unfortunate because God's Word is just as powerful and life changing today as it has always been!

The Word of God tells us that there are two life roads—one leads to eternal life, the other to eternal death. There is an art to staying on the right road. There will be pitfalls and enemies who seek to trip us up and distract, divert, and destroy us along the way. But Jill Briscoe shows us that the Holy Spirit will guide, direct, and empower us to keep on walking in the everlasting way!

What does it mean to live in the Word? How do you hear His voice and apply it to your daily life? Jill Briscoe shows us that it starts with bringing your heart, your mind, and your will when you sit down and spend time reading His Word. Psalm 119:18 says, Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

We learn in Scripture how God wrestled Jacob to the ground one night and turned him upside down—so he could live right-side up. Jacob became a "prince" with God instead of a pain. When we're suffering the consequences of our own poor choices; when we're bearing the brunt of someone's vengeance and anger; when we feel absolutely on our own and life is not working out as planned, that's when God will turn up. He wants to walk down the stairway of heaven right into our hearts to make us aware of His personal interest and concern.

Most of us feel like we're juggling so many roles and responsibilities—in our homes, families, workplaces, social activities. How do we balance all of these things while being the reflection of Christ to the people we encounter every day? In this message, Jill teaches how we can use the example of the conscientious Proverbs 31 woman to have the Lord's heart for the world around us.
