Chains of Blessing

April 11, 2018

What do you do when you are suffering through a hard time? Many of us sulk, complain, and feel sorry for ourselves. Others put on a strong face, but when they are alone, the fear and sadness take over, and they break down. Much of the apostle Paul’s life was spent suffering—most of the time in jail. But unlike many of us, Paul was joyful no matter what his circumstance.

This “spiritual art” of contentment was something Paul learned—and it wasn’t easy. In this message, Jill uses Paul’s life as an example of how we can learn contentment, joy, and peace of mind no matter what we are going through.

Have you ever received a gift you didn’t deserve? This is exactly what happens at the judgment seat of Christ. The Bible is filled with hints of what this event might be like for us. Jill discusses a couple of them for us to try and paint us a picture. Not only do we receive the gift of dwelling in heaven when Christ died on the cross for us, we also get rewarded for the things that Christ did through us while we were on earth.

We have the free will to make our own choices in life. These choices set the path for our earthly existence and, ultimately, our eternal existence. But there is a coming day when we will stand at the great white throne of God and deal with the consequences of the most important choice we had to make on earth. Jill talks through several verses in the Bible explaining the ramifications of the decision to trust Jesus Christ as our Savior, or not. This message includes Jill reading her poem, “Judge Jesus.”

Do you have friends and family who have not yet accepted the Lord? Knowing that our time on earth could end at any moment, are you worried about them spending eternity in the outer darkness called hell? Jill insists that if hell is a real existence and there’s a possibility that our unbelieving loved ones may end up there, it is a crucial matter to discuss. She dives into this controversial topic: Is there a second chance to accept Christ after death?

What is hell? How could a loving God create such a horrible place and then be willing to send His creation there? Jill agrees that these are normal thoughts to have, but she uses a number of passages to change our perspective on the matter. The greatest fall came when God’s highest angel wanted to take His place and therefore was thrown out of heaven; hell was created as this angel’s new home. Hell was never created by God for man, but if we choose to reject Him, this dreadful place becomes our eternal home. This is message includes Jill’s poem “The Wish Wand.”

Do you have troubles in your life that are causing grief or tension in your household? Do you dream of living in a place where joy is abundant and everything around you is perfect? This is what heaven will be like. Revelation 22 gives us a snapshot of the beauty and perfection that awaits those of us who have put our trust in the Lord. Heaven will be a true home with a true father.

There is a peace that comes with knowing you can trust in someone’s promise. Being sure about our eternity in heaven is no exception. Jill speaks on John 14 where Jesus promises all believers that He has gone to prepare a place for us and he will return for us once again. His death on the cross made it possible for Him to follow through on this promise.

Life is full of squalls—sudden unannounced and unexpected storms that can lead us to question if God is in control of our lives. Death, sickness, unemployment, broken relationships, fears and failures are some of the troubles Satan uses to swamp us with doubt, usually when we’re already stressed and exhausted. How do you respond when you’re hit with the squalls of life? Are you like the disciples in Mark 4 who wondered why Jesus slept while their boat was sinking, or do you believe God is in as much control when He’s seemingly asleep as when He’s obviously awake? Do you pray, “Don’t let there be another squall”? Or do you see storms as part of God’s plan for your life? Teaching from the Gospel of Mark, Jill Briscoe addresses the issues of suffering and faith, challenging us to examine our beliefs in God in the midst of trouble.

How do you approach crisis? Many of us see crisis as a dead end, when, in reality, it’s a crossroads, presenting both danger and opportunity. Opportunity for what? To see what God alone can do with the most impossible situations. In this message, Jill Briscoe shares how the miracle of Easter and the resurrection of Jesus can change how you respond to crisis. We learn the same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in us and works in us! At the completion of the message from Mark 16:1-8, Jill expresses Christ’s sacrifice through her poem “You Wore My Thorns.”

“On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.’” After Jesus’ ascension into heaven, the believers were filled with fear, wondering if they would be next to be crucified. But something happened that energized these people, gave them power to speak and do things as they never could have before!

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” It’s no secret that all of us will die in the end. Even Jesus died! And this makes His resurrection one of the most important aspects of His life and a source of incredible hope for us.
