Chains of Blessing

November 22, 2017

What do you do when you are suffering through a hard time? Many of us sulk, complain, and feel sorry for ourselves. Others put on a strong face, but when they are alone, the fear and sadness take over, and they break down. Much of the apostle Paul’s life was spent suffering—most of the time in jail. But unlike many of us, Paul was joyful no matter what his circumstance.

This “spiritual art” of contentment was something Paul learned—and it wasn’t easy. In this message, Jill uses Paul’s life as an example of how we can learn contentment, joy, and peace of mind no matter what we are going through.

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.” After Jesus’ ascension into heaven, the believers were filled with fear, wondering if they would be next to be crucified. But something happened that energized these people, gave them power to speak and do things as they never could have before!

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” It’s no secret that all of us will die in the end. Even Jesus died! And this makes His resurrection one of the most important aspects of His life and a source of incredible hope for us.

When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” How would you feel if you knew you were going to die painfully tomorrow? When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane, He was struggling with that same knowledge, for not only was He to be crucified the next day, but He was also to bear the weight of all our sin! How did He deal with such emotions? And how can we handle emotions in our own lives?

So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.” Jesus’ ministry only spanned three short years but had an incredible impact, lasting millennia. What was it about his approach that gave him such power?

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”

“The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”

Does anyone ever ask, “How are you?” and you reply, “Well, under the circumstances....” The problem is that’s exactly where we are living—under the circumstances! How do we rise above the adversity and sing a song of praise? From the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, Jill Briscoe shows us how Hannah, under very difficult circumstances, found the secret.

What is God using to chisel you into the image of Christ? Will you lie still in His hand and let Him do it?  For Jeremiah, God was using his ministry partner, Baruch, to chisel and hammer him into shape. Jeremiah, too, was chiseling Baruch. Without the encouragement of the other, neither would have had faith enough to finish when their ministry got difficult.  In this message, Jill describes how we can learn to work with and celebrate the differences between us and the people in our lives.

Do you ever find yourself running away from God’s plans because you feel inadequate? Jeremiah felt inadequate when God called him to be a prophet. But God spoke a promise to Jeremiah saying, “My plan will be in your life, My work will be in your hand, and My words will be in your mouth.”  In this message, Jill teaches how to have the kind of faith that believes that God will enable and equip us to do everything He asks of us.
