The Lord is My Light - Part 1

August 23, 2018

Depending on where you are, walking in the darkness can be precarious. If you’re the parent of little ones, the sharp edge of Legos can take a grown man down. If you’re a believer, walking in the darkness will lead you in a place God never intends you to be. As we make our way through Ephesians, Pastor Jeff shows us to what extent our relationship with darkness existed. And then shows us how to walk in the light in Christ as a part of being God’s dear children. With more on that, let’s open our Bibles to Ephesians 5 for our study titled, “The Lord is My Light - Part 1 with Pastor Jeff Johnson.

Welcome to Sound Doctrine. The radio ministry of Calvary Chapel Downey with Pastor Jeff Johnson. To those who hear claims of judgment and evaluation on someone’s spiritual status and think that Christians are simply a group of people who desire to condemn people they hate, consider this: God’s Word is the standard from which anyone who follows Christ uses and submits to themselves. We say this because in our portion of Ephesians we learn that there is a classification of people who practice certain sinful behavior won’t enter the kingdom of God. Pastor Jeff Johnson cautions us against the serious consequences of immorality in our final study in Ephesians titled, “How Not to Walk.”

In order for us to enjoy God’s presence, power, and protection, personal holiness is required in our lives, the separation from evil, and separation to the Lord. Experiencing God’s presence depends on our obedience to His commands. As we continue to learn, “How Not to Walk” in Ephesians, we are noticing how God calls us to avoid the things that promote self-centeredness and self-love above a sacrificial love for others. Pastor Jeff continues to exhort us to sound living from Sound Doctrine in Ephesians chapter 5.

Psalm 1 is one of the most read psalms in the Bible. It outlines the way of the man or woman who is blessed by God. The most noteworthy characteristics of being a blessed person is by what that person doesn’t do as much as what they do. As we continue our studies in Ephesians the apostle Paul reminds us that walking as children who resemble their heavenly Father, there are sinful practices we need to stay as far away from as possible. We begin a new series titled, “How Not to Walk”, and we invite you to take the next few moments and  join Pastor Jeff in Ephesians 5 for today’s edition of Sound Doctrine.

There is no lack of self-help books that will demonstrate the science of body language to learn how to lead people, or 5 quick ways to rise above co-workers within the corporate ranks. These are all based on serving ourselves. But if we desire to have an eternal impact on those around us, God calls us to follow in the footsteps of Jesus through self-denial and sacrifice. It’s our final message in the study titled, “God is Love, So Walk in Love”. If you have your Bibles, join us in Ephesians 5 for our time together in Sound Doctrine.

As a child did you ever have that experience when you saw or copied other children? Maybe you watched some kids repeat exactly what another child said over and over to the annoyance of the first child. Today Pastor Jeff says that in order to be imitators of God, we need to learn how to walk in the power of God’s Spirit by casting off the anger, bitterness and resentment of our flesh. This and so much more are included in our study titled, “God is Love, so Walk in Love” with Pastor Jeff Johnson in Ephesians 5 for today’s encouragement in Sound Doctrine.

As believers we live inbetween two worlds. The physical world of the here and now. And the future that is to come, brought by Jesus Christ. While we recognize that the days are growing darker as time progresses on this world, this should cause us to look up with hopeful expectation because our redemption is drawing near. In Ephesians 5 we are given commands on how to walk, a practical guide on how to be in the world, but not of the world. With more on our study titled, “God is love, so Walk in Love,” here is Pastor Jeff Johnson.

We all like the idea of being tender hearted. The grace and love that flows through that heart resembles Jesus. And we love the idea. But the practice of forgiveness is our challenge. Mark Twain said, “Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.” In today’s edition of Sound Doctrine Pastor Jeff Johnson helps us to adopt a Biblical perspective on the how and why we forgive from Ephesians 4. If you’re able, we invite you to grab your Bible and take notes for our final message in our study titled, “Hard Hearted or Tender Hearted?” with Pastor Jeff Johnson.

When it comes to developing a hardened heart, we discover that it doesn’t happen overnight. Through the process of time, offenses we have received continue to fester within our minds. But we don’t have to allow it to be that way either. In our study of Sound Doctrine today, Pastor Jeff Johnson tells us that we need to put up a good spiritual fight to bring ourselves to obey the Lord and watch Him restore a tender heart once again. We invite you to join us for our study titled, “Hard Hearted or Tender Hearted” in Ephesians 4 with Pastor Jeff Johnson.

Robert Frost’s poem, “The Road Not Taken” details two paths in the woods. Knowing he can only take one, he consoles himself saying he’ll get to the other path another time. As you read the poem, you realize Frost is talking about life choices. Today on Sound Doctrine the apostle Paul is showing us two divergent paths in the Christian life. One leads to blessing with Christ, while the other leads to bondage. Pastor Jeff reminds us of the importance to choose God’s way because Satan is always looking to bring us down. With more on that, let’s begin our study titled, “Hard-Hearted or Tender-Hearted” with Pastor Jeff Johnson.

The process of grieving the Holy Spirit always follows resisting what God is trying to do through His conviction in our hearts. The more we resist the more numb and dull our sense of His conviction becomes. But conversely the more we listen and obey when He is speaking to us, the more we are pleasing to Him. In our final episode of “Grieving the Spirit - Part 2” we discover that the battle between flesh and the Spirit is won as we surrender to the Lord on a daily basis with godly habits, thoughts which make a lifestyle of feeding ourselves with God’s Word, fellowship, and prayer. We invite you to join us in Ephesians 4 for today’s study with Pastor Jeff Johnson.
