Nature abhors a vacuum. When we walk in the Spirit, we will experience the joy and liberty that God has given to us in Jesus Christ. But when we fail to be filled with God’s Spirit, we will inevitably walk in legalism, a mere shell of what God intends for us. Pastor Jeff is showing how we can become our own worst enemies like Ananias and Sapphira by pretending to be religious and walking with the Lord, when in reality we are walking in the flesh. He reveals how that robs the church of her testimony to the world when we try to do in our own flesh, what God can only accomplish by His Spirit. When someone is looking for a moving of God’s Spirit among a group of people, at an event, or otherwise, signs and wonders of tongues, prophecy, or miracles are sought after. However, to only look at the gifts of signs is to overlook and miss an important aspect of how the Spirit moved among the people of God in the early church. Pastor Jeff shows that the Holy Spirit had such devotion from the believers at that time that it was characterized by surrender, joy, and a willingness to provide for the needs of those around them. Paul said, “Now concerning spiritual gifts or things, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant.” Yet we discover that ignorance is high regarding the Holy Spirit among believers today. Pressure will either make you better or worse. There is no inbetween. It is through pressure that we are shown what we are made of, what comes out of our hearts, mouths, and minds. And today as we begin a new study in the book of Acts, Pastor Jeff shows us that the pressure began to increase from the religious leaders in Jerusalem upon the early church. At that point they were confronted with how they were going to respond. The old adage don’t judge a book by its cover was never more true than when the religious leaders profiled Peter and John. Seeing only simple fishermen, they attempted to strong arm them with their stifling legalism. Today we continue to look at the three mistakes they made in their assumptions and we discover that they asked they underestimated what God was doing, which caused them to ask the wrong questions to the disciples. Pastor Jeff shows when a godly person has convictions, God is able to use that person greatly. The difference between recognizing that Jesus Christ is alive today and only reading about Jesus in the Bible is by spending time with Him daily. As we delve into the nuggets and treasures of God’s Word we will become more like Jesus Christ and He will be seen in and through our lives. As Pastor Jeff reminds us that was the key for Mary instead of Martha, it was the key for the early church as they were standing before their persecutors. If others are going to see Jesus at work in us, then we too must have daily time with the Lord as well. Jesus is the only way to salvation. There is no other person, no other activity, and no other thing that can bring salvation. Yet throughout history mankind has continued to devise arguments, erroneous logic, and evasive ways to dodge the issue of salvation. As Pastor Jeff shows in our text today, it is God’s Spirit is convincing the world and bringing people to a recognition that they need Jesus.
