The Redemptive Suffering Of Christ

July 28, 2022

The only person who could have died for our sin is a sinless person. That disqualifies everyone except Jesus. Only He could still remain God and pay the penalty of our sin to bring us to God.

Dr. Stanley tells us that redemptive suffering does not gain us forgiveness for our sin. Forgiveness results from God’s grace, freely given through Christ, which cannot be earned. God is ready, willing, and able to bring us to Him. He’s done everything he can through Christ’s resurrection. But it is now up to us to receive Him by faithfully following what He says. One act of obedience to God is to be baptized. It helps us recognize that when Christ died, we died. When He was buried, we were buried. And when He arose, we arose.

Peter instructed believers so that when persecution came, they’d know how to respond. Dr. Stanley says we should not be intimidated when we face adversity. Since we are born again, nobody can harm our godly spirits, no matter what may happen to us. It is the presence of God and His blessing that enable us to be confident, enthusiastic, committed, and engaged in the Lord’s work. We should be ready to give an account for the hope and faith we have. And we should be able to do so with a clear conscience. If someone were to ask you why you are a Christian, how would you respond?

Are you compassionate toward those around you? Are you truly sensitive to them and their needs? Peter encouraged the believers in his day to act out who they really were, even when they were under persecution. He told them that to relate to others, they should do so with a Christian conduct. Dr. Stanley details five characteristics that Peter says can help build strong Christian relationships. Since we have the Spirit of God within us, we ought to be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit. When others mistreat us, we should not respond with vengeance but look for a reason to bless them instead. What you say and how you act have more impact on your testimony than you might imagine.

How well do we influence others? Peter told those undergoing persecution that their trials could provide them with a tremendous opportunity to positively influence the unbelievers all around them. He told them to guard their behavior and public conduct so those unbelievers would observe their good deeds and reverse their slander of them—and perhaps become converts to Christianity themselves. Dr. Stanley tells us it’s not enough to use our godly lives for ministry but that we must use our influence in our local community and beyond. He says we should live so that others will look at us and want to know the God who has transformed us.

Peter's goal was to encourage those facing difficulty by showing them who they are in relationship to Jesus Christ. Dr. Stanley examines Peter’s conviction that each Christian’s identity is like a stone built upon the foundation of Jesus Christ. God has fitted us all together in the body of Christ to love one another. So in times of discouragement, we need to rely on the strength of love and encouragement from others. The Spirit of God has equipped us to face everything. We just need reminders that He wants us to walk in joy, as people who know our identity.

What evidence do we have that we're growing spiritually? Do we have a deeper hunger and more fulfilling understanding of God than we used to? Dr. Stanley explains that if we want to grow spiritually, we must first deal with sin so that our minds can be responsive to the Spirit of God within us. Then we have to be hungry for the Word of God to unite the truth and the faith in our hearts. How else will we grow in Christ’s likeness?

How can we love someone when that person is acting in an unloving fashion? Peter says, "Since you've been obedient to the truth you have purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren" (1 Peter 1:22). Dr. Stanley explains that if we're going to be able to love through tough times, we must first purify our hearts by being obedient to the truth of God’s Word. Only when the heart is pure are we able to love anybody. If we can learn to love God in tough times, we will be enriched to love others. God loves every single one of us perfectly because He loves us out of a pure heart.

It is true that difficulty and heartache build character. However, adversity is even more effective in revealing the character we already have. In those times, our conduct reflects what we truly believe about God and His Word. Dr. Stanley explains why it is so important for us to walk with the Lord daily and learn how He teaches us to endure seasons of trial with faith and joy.
