Loving Through the Tough Times

July 20, 2022

How can we love someone when that person is acting in an unloving fashion? Peter says, "Since you've been obedient to the truth you have purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren" (1 Peter 1:22).

Dr. Stanley explains that if we're going to be able to love through tough times, we must first purify our hearts by being obedient to the truth of God’s Word. Only when the heart is pure are we able to love anybody. If we can learn to love God in tough times, we will be enriched to love others. God loves every single one of us perfectly because He loves us out of a pure heart.

Throughout the centuries, God spoke through many faithful prophets about the coming of Messiah. After Jesus’ resurrection, the Holy Spirit worked in the hearts of men who wrote about the wonderful news of salvation in Christ. Dr. Stanley explains the differences between how the Father spoke through the prophets of the past and how He ministers through His Holy Spirit and His Word today. He tells us that God has given the fullness of His revelation through His Word but asks what it means for us today and if we’re still receiving the Lord’s revelation.

As discouraging as trials can be, no amount of complaining or self-pity can ever bring about a solution. In fact, our negative thoughts and attitudes actually make our problems worse. So how can we maintain a proper perspective when our problems weigh heavily on our shoulders? Dr. Stanley reminds us that trials and challenges are no time for frustration, but rather a time to shine for Christ. Recognize that adversity is a tool the Master uses to shape us. It will not only help you survive your difficulties, but also find victory in them.
