Tom Munson - Trijicon

May 21, 2012
A controversy about scripture references on scopes made for the military created quite a stir not long ago. This is one of the topics that are discussed as Gerry visits with Tom Munson from Trijicon. The two talk about that issue, and the fact that this manufacturer of illuminated sights has been in the practice of putting Bible verse references on their
products since their beginning. Tom also shares how hearing Joni Erikson Tada speak not long after her diving accident where her neck was broken, moved him in such a way that he prayed to receive Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Having shot the world’s record typical white tail buck with the crossbow, Brad Jerman has had many opportunities to share about the Creator God. Brad joins Gerry and Daryl Christensen at a day-long event just outside of Houston, Texas, where the goal is to see lives transformed. Brad shares his testimony which included multiple arrests, problems with drugs and alcohol, and pornography to the point that it almost destroyed his marriage. His transformation because of the grace of God also includes his greatest hunting experiences, and that is time spent in the blind hunting deer with his daughters.

Jay Yelas is a pro bass angler fishing on the FLW Bass Tour. He visits with Gerry as they sit in a bass boat on Lake St. Clair somewhere close to the Canadian border on the Detroit, Michigan side. The two discuss outdoor outreach, and how you can use God’s creation (Romans 1:20), tied to changed lives (Ephesians 2:10), to see sportsmen come to know Jesus as Creator, Lord and Savior.

Gerry hooks up with Mark Copeland who manages Jay’s Sporting Goods, two stores located in Michigan. Mark relates how his coming to a Trail to Adventure! Conference in Roscommon, Michigan moved him to start using his love of archery to reach young people for Jesus Christ. Mark got involved with the Centershot Ministry that brings archery into the church, and correlates the different techniques needed to learn to shoot properly with God’s Word. Mark also discusses how important listening is in communication, and how, as men, we need to be willing to sacrifice our time in the outdoors in exchange for time with the family.

This week’s interview is from Prince of Wales Island in the panhandle of Alaska. Gerry visits with Keith and Cheryl Webb. Keith is the pastor of the Coffman Cove Baptist Church. The couple tells the story of the years they have been working on the Blue Water Christian Youth Camp, a place where youth from the island and other communities on other islands in that part of Alaska can come for a week. The Webbs share how even in the building of the facility that they believe will be used by God to change lives, life-changing decisions have been made by those who have come to help with the construction.

This interview should be of incredible interest and importance to anyone who hunts from a tree stand. Keith Jones of Summit Tree Stands reflects on the changes in safety that have occurred in the tree stand industry. The effort is to reduce the number of hunters injured or killed, which is currently one out of every three who climb into the heights of the timber where they are hunting. Gerry and Keith give information to the listeners that they both hope will keep them from becoming one of these sad statistics.

This interview is at Rushing Wind Retreat Center for the men’s fishing retreats held each summer in June. The interview is with Mitch Kjose, founder of Christian Sportsman’s Fellowship Plus. Mitch shares how he got involved in the outdoors as a young man, trapping to make extra money. In the later years growing up in South Dakota, he began to see that one could use outdoor recreational activities to change lives for eternity. It is something that this ministry has been able to do in the years since it got off the ground.

Pro bass fisherman Mark Davis shares how the loss of his mom when he was a young boy, and his adventures in the outdoors, caused him to see that one day he could make a living as a fisherman. After nine years on the bass fishing circuit, he was looking at throwing in the towel because he never won the “big one”. It was at this point having been a Christian for a number of years he finally decided to turn his fishing over to Jesus Christ. That year he won Angler of the Year and the Bass Master Classic, something no one had ever done before.

This week's program is an interview with Terry Mouldon of Mouldy’s Tackle Shop in Chippewa Falls, WI. Terry shares with Gerry and the listeners about how he got interested in outdoors through his dad’s trout fishing, then moved on to fishing for muskies and producing lures to hook these big-toothed predators. Terry goes on to tell of how hearing an interview with his fishing hero, Al Lindner, and his testimony of not knowing how to pray brought him to making a life-changing decision.

Outdoor photography legend and writer for Deer & Deer Hunting magazine, Charlie Alsheimer, talks about the transformation he has seen in his years in the business. Charlie was one of the first men ever to start speaking at game dinners and is in such demand that he is normally booked up for three years in advance. Gerry and Charlie talk about the opportunities that we have through God’s creation to share the Gospel, and what kind of dramatic changes that have also been seen in our society since he began writing and snapping photos for a living.

Gerry hooks up with fishing legend Hank Parker, and the two talk about the opportunities that Hank has because of his notoriety in the outdoor world to share the Gospel, not just at game dinners, but even sometimes at boat shows even though those visiting with him may not feel it’s even appropriate for their children to hear. Hank shares how things happen in our lives, the loss of loved ones, that we can’t always explain, might not even be able to understand completely until the day that we are in the presence of our Creator and Lord Jesus Christ.
