July 6, 2021

One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? There's an aspect of the book of Esther that's important to catch, but it's hard because of the narrative technique used. It's not immediately obvious to us, but it's meant to make you laugh—in a "gallows humor" sort of way.

The person who trusts in the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ cannot give up on following God because they are no longer afraid, no longer weak, and no longer false. Once we trust God's gospel we are changed by his Holy Spirit, and we desire to be more like him. Therefore, we cannot give up!

God will not give up on us because he is jealous for our good. He has a covenant commitment to us. His love for us is an exclusive love. This passage talks about the ten promises of love.

You can't even understand the good news in the Bible if you don't understand the bad news first. One of the reasons people are not filled with joy and peace is because they don't really realize what they've been rescued from by Christ.

The best-laid plans of men often go awry. This applies to everything from dinner plans to bigger issues. But what about those times when you feel that something God promised to you hasn't come about? God hasn't really let you down because His character is reliable and He has a bigger plan.

Zechariah's visions were striking; he struggled to be taken seriously. The same can sometimes be true for preachers today.

We reason that the possibility of us making any real difference with our lives is so minimal. We despise what we see as the small things. But the faithfulness of integrity in every corner of your life has a huge impact over time.
