Contend for the Faith: Keep On Going

July 2, 2021

One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? The person who trusts in the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ cannot give up on following God because they are no longer afraid, no longer weak, and no longer false. Once we trust God's gospel we are changed by his Holy Spirit, and we desire to be more like him. Therefore, we cannot give up!

The best-laid plans of men often go awry. This applies to everything from dinner plans to bigger issues. But what about those times when you feel that something God promised to you hasn't come about? God hasn't really let you down because His character is reliable and He has a bigger plan.

Zechariah's visions were striking; he struggled to be taken seriously. The same can sometimes be true for preachers today.

We reason that the possibility of us making any real difference with our lives is so minimal. We despise what we see as the small things. But the faithfulness of integrity in every corner of your life has a huge impact over time.

We seem to have an appetite for movies that depict special powers and muscular brawn defeating evil. That makes this passage seem so counterintuitive: not by might, nor by power. Our access to God might be our super power!

Perhaps you're feeling that God has lost sight of you. Perhaps you're frustrated that others who you know aren't following Christ seem to have an easier time than you. God has a word of comfort for you. We need to live in the light of the future hope of the Messiah's return.

The Israelites are back in the Promised Land, but are they returning to their bad habits? God sends his prophet Zechariah to say there's hope beyond their current situation—and hope of another Promised Land far in the future with the Messiah.
