June 22, 2021

Perhaps you're feeling that God has lost sight of you. Perhaps you're frustrated that others who you know aren't following Christ seem to have an easier time than you. God has a word of comfort for you. We need to live in the light of the future hope of the Messiah's return.

One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? People have all sorts of funny ideas about prayer, like you can do it wrong—"be careful what you pray for!" We have a good Father and we need to come before him in fullness of conviction. Prayer is a powerful tool, and this is a call for us to be active in prayer.

The church in America was not ready when things went wrong. We've heard too much of a positivity message. The storm of this pandemic has revealed the foundation we have built on. The church is the hospital for the sick, not an entertainment factory.

It's a balancing act. On the one hand, as a Christian you have a reason for your faith that goes far beyond merely your personal experience. On the other hand, you do have a personal experience and you know Jesus personally and can testify to that.

The identity we have as God's creation, and who He has made us to be in Christ defines our aspirations and dreams. We become who He has designed us to be. That is the core of humility.

America and England are pretty safe places for faith, but in a global context, there are Christian brothers and sisters facing daily persecution. And there are concerning potential trajectories in the rest of the world that we need to be aware of. We need to make the most of the opportunities before us today.

The gospel reaches out to those who are excluded because of their background. In Christ, the dividing wall of hostility (between Jew and Gentile, slave and free, and across races and classes) is broken down.
