Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? In today's passage, Jesus' references to a good shepherd would have been completely understood by his audience. They would have known what a shepherd is and does. The idea of the shepherd-king is deeply rooted in Israel's history going back to David. Today we learn about the Good Shepherd.

Jesus had a sense of urgency and made a deliberate use of his limited time. He wasn't just meandering around the hills of Jerusalem. He had an agenda and a job to get done, and He was very focused on it. As His disciples, we should have the same urgency to proclaim the gospel today.

It is thought by so many that suffering is a conundrum for Christianity. But actually, suffering is a confirmation of the Christian worldview and points to the Christian gospel. We worship a Christ who suffered. Jesus explains the purpose of suffering—that the works of God might be displayed.

Awesome worship is often the craving of church hoppers these days. Without it, going to a church service can feel as exciting as watching paint dry. This passage helps us see what life is like without God.

The reason people back away from truth speaking is because they want the freedom to construct their lives any way they want. But actually, according to this passage, freedom does not come from less truth, but from the truth. True freedom is being the person you were made to be, and that means coming into alignment with the Creator's design. That truth will indeed set you free.

Have you ever felt that you couldn't make as big a difference in your life as you wanted? Does it feel like the darkness grows and pushes back at you in your headspace and in your heart? Jesus says He's the light of the world, and in this passage, we will bask in the warmth of that light and focus on this profound truth.

Have you ever been in a situation where you sense that other people do not approve of you or like what you are doing? Through the story of the woman caught in adultery, we learn that it isn't about pointing fingers at each other, it's about being the hand that lifts others up and puts them back on the right path.

What is it you're using to numb the pain and lack of hope that you feel? Is it alcohol, a drug, or just entertainment—watching movie after movie that make you forget your sense of meaninglessness? We all experience some degree of pain as a part of the human condition, and that issue is addressed by this passage.

The answer to the human problem is not systemic cultural change or socio-economic class revolution. The answer is dealing with human nature and the human heart, starting with ourselves.
