April 23, 2021

There's only one thing harder than living alone—learning to live with another person! Marriage is like juggling—it looks easy until you try it! All jokes aside, the church family includes all of those who love Jesus, including those who are single. This teaching is for everyone.

One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? We can be creative but not be the Creator; we can invent but not truly create. The "gender agenda" is an attempt to recreate humanity. It will not work. Sexual fidelity is God's best for us.

We will never achieve much nor make life work until we master our fears. The only way to do that is to fear and reverence our Master. The Lord is good and loving, and his perfect love casts out all fear.

Fellowship provides the context for friendship. Jesus had his inner core: there was the 72, then the 12, then his close friendship with Peter, James and John. Too many people in today's world don't really have friends to share life with. Who are your gospel friends?

The bottom line is that there are plenty of salesmen for Jesus today. But there are far too few free samples! When we are formed to be more like Christ, we become the free samples where people can taste and see that the Lord is good. The two men mentioned in this passage are not superstars, just faithful, regular guys who are the free samples of their day.

Paul talks about local heroes in this passage. It's an interesting study as Paul sheds a light on the people who are helping him with his efforts around the gospel.

If we are to see the Western world come back to Christ, it will begin by talking to God about people. Easy to say; hard to do. The power of sharing about Christ with others comes from prayer. And when you pray for people, you increasingly get a burden to talk to them about God.

Paul is asking for opportunities for the message of the gospel to be communicated clearly. Consider how remarkable that is! He is in prison. He is in chains. But his prayer is not for his own release, but for the release of the gospel.
