One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? According to the Bible, it is an expression of love to discipline your childen, but society is leaning the other way. Think of parenting this way: you're given a rose and your task is to prune it to make it the best rose it can be. But you're not trying to change the rose into a lily. Don't try to force them into a particular mold, but discover who they've been made to be by God.

It's important to study the Bible because we need to hear what it says. God's mind is bigger than ours. One of the great temptations is to want to bring the Bible into line with our thinking rather than the other way around. We always need to submit to Scripture, even when it says things that make us feel uncomfortable.

The grand test of any choice we have is this: can we do it in Jesus' name? And thankfulness fuels this principle. Everything is orientated toward him—our discernment and our attitude.

We tend to think of peacefulness as something passive. The truth is, in order to have peace we need to let it rule, and that is something quite active. We need to actively guard our minds and hearts in order to experience the promise of the peace of Christ in practice.

The more holy we are, the less judgmental we will become. Humility is key to holiness so we don't display religious pride. The roadmap on how to be holy is to become like Christ.
